Dart Introduction
The story of fashion is the story of shaping a flat piece of cloth to fit a three-dimensional, curving human body. For centuries, the main tools were simple the humble hero of tailoring and the secret to a perfect fit.
Shifting Dart Location
One of the fundamental rules of pattern drafting is that darts can be shifted to almost any seam line without altering the underlying fit of the garment. Only the external shape of the pattern piece changes; the total fabric volume and shape over the body remain identical.
Dart Tucks
A dart tuck (often called a release tuck) is a decorative variation of a standard dart. Instead of stitching along the dart legs all the way to a pointed apex, a dart tuck is stitched only partway along its length, leaving the end open.
Multiple Darts
Several darts may be used instead of a single dart to create more original designs. This transfer of fullness will not change the original fit of the garment.
Darts in Seams
A dart does not always need to end as a stitched triangular fold within the body of a pattern piece. By separating a pattern into multiple panels, dart intake can be absorbed directly into structural design lines and style seams without altering the garment's fit or bust contouring.
