Instructions Intro
Draft Overview
The drafting instructions in this academy are organized into distinct categories. Within each category, you will find a series of Draft Overview pages.
A Draft Overview represents a single complete Pattern Set (such as a full sloper, dress, or jacket). Each pattern set consists of one or more Component Drafts—for example, a basic bodice sloper pattern set contains three component drafts: the Front, Back, and Sleeve.
The Draft Overview page serves as the central reference hub, providing the fit evaluation, ease analysis, and download links for all component instructions required to complete the pattern set.
The terms sloper and basic block are used interchangeably throughout these instructions to refer to a foundational, fitted pattern without added design ease.
Anatomy of an Overview Page
Every Draft Overview includes the following standard sections:
Specifications
- Category: Defines the type of pattern set (e.g., Sloper, Dress, Coat).
- Adaptation: General source for the draft instructions. All drafts sourced from existing books will be adaptations. The primary reason is that no source uses CAD software, it is all intended for paper and pencil. Also, PatternMaker Pro has a number of advanced features that were created to make drafting easier. Those will be used whenever possible.
- Drafting Difficulty: This is how hard the draft is to achieve in PatternMaker Pro. Most drafts will be quite easy because of the efficient workflow. However, when it is more difficult the reasoning will be provided.
- Sewing Difficulty: Just because something is easy to draft it doesn't mean it is easy to sew. I'll let you know when sewing is a bit more challenging and why.
- Components: Lists all individual component drafts required to complete the full pattern set.
Ease Analysis
Ease defines the final silhouette, movement, and fit. Every overview details the breakdown of integrated Wearing Ease, Design Ease, and specific Component Ease (such as sleeve cap ease or crotch depth allowance).
Testing & Fit Evaluation
Every draft is built, tested, and sewn before publication. Instructions are tested directly inside PatternMaker Pro, printed, and constructed as test garments:
- Test Setup: Details the test parameters, including the measurement set used, scale (typically 1/2-scale), and dress form setup.
- Fit Analysis & Observations: Provides honest feedback on the resulting fit, silhouette, and construction process to help you decide if the draft suits your specific purpose.
Errors & Corrections
I get very upset when I find errors in drafting books. They can be very frustrating, particularly for beginners. I've done my best to avoid making these myself, but ... human here. If you find an error anywhere in the instructions or elsewhere on the site, please do not hesitate to let me know about it. Send me an email at academy [at] PatternMakerPro [dot] com.
