Peplums, Flounces, Godet

Once the core slash-and-spread principles are established, fullness can be combined with style lines to create structural features like peplums, circular flounces, and inset godets.

Peplums and Flounces

Fluted or circular peplums attached at the waistline introduce flare over the hips without requiring waist gathering.

  • Radial Slash-and-Spread: Starting with a fitted waist band or peplum base, slash from the outer hem edge up to the waist seam hinge.
  • Fanning the Hem: Spreading the hem slashes transforms a straight or gently curved band into a pronounced arc or partial circle.
  • Circular Draping: The greater the spread at the outer hem, the more dramatic the ripples and cascading drape.

Godets (Inset Fullness)

A godet is a triangular, semi-circular, or circular fabric insert set into a seam or vertical slash line. It adds localized flare and dramatic movement at hems (such as trumpet skirts or bell sleeves) while leaving the upper garment snugly fitted.
