Visualize and Optimize Fabric Usage​

The layout system in Patternmaker Pro is a powerful feature designed to provide a visual representation of your fabric for efficient pattern placement and accurate yardage estimates. It simulates how your pattern pieces will fit onto a bolt of fabric, helping you optimize your cutting plan before you even touch real material.

Key Features and Benefits​

  • Fabric Simulation: Create new layouts by defining the fabric width and selecting a background to represent the right side, wrong side, or interfacing. This visual aid helps you plan your cuts effectively.
  • Efficient Arrangement: Easily place and arrange your patterns on the simulated fabric. Hover over a pattern to highlight it, then click and drag to position it precisely.
  • Pattern Manipulation: Once placed, you can manipulate patterns directly within the layout.
    • Add a custom label to any pattern piece.
    • Rotate patterns in 45-degree increments to find the best fit on your fabric.
    • Flip patterns horizontally to account for fabric grain or symmetrical pieces. This action automatically applies a "Wrong Side" background to indicate the flipped state.
    • Remove patterns from a specific layout without deleting them from your overall layout system.
  • Dynamic Fabric Length: The system automatically adjusts the fabric length in the layout based on your pattern placement, providing real-time feedback on your yardage requirements.
  • Fabric Folding: Simulate fabric folds (e.g., on the left or right side) to plan for cutting on the fold or to visualize fabric usage more accurately. You can interactively drag these fold lines, and the fabric will resize accordingly.
  • Scaled View for Ease of Use: All items within the layout system are scaled to ¼ of their real size. This scaling makes arrangement significantly easier, allowing more of your pattern pieces to fit within the visible workspace area for better planning.

Getting Started with Layouts​

To begin using layouts:

  • Create Patterns for Layout: Before you can add pattern outlines to a layout, they must first be created based on a pattern draft.
  • Add a Layout: Create a new layout, providing a name and defining your fabric width and background.
  • Add Patterns to Layout: Once layouts and patterns for layout are ready, place your prepared pattern pieces onto your chosen layout.
  • Arrange Patterns: Position, rotate, flip, and label your patterns on the fabric.
  • Edit Layout Properties: Modify existing layouts, including changing their name, fabric background, or width, and to add or remove fabric folds.
  • Output the Layout: Generate and save a PNG image of your completed layout. This file is ideal for integrating into pattern packets for distribution or for your personal referral.
