What it Does The advanced Waistband tool gives you complete control over every dimension, from custom ease to precise extensions. Effortlessly draft complex, perfectly-fitting waistbands with automated calculations that integrate seamlessly with your existing pattern edges, saving you critical time and guaranteeing a flawless result.

Waistband Edge Selection

This process determines the necessary measurements for drafting the waistband based on your pattern edges.

Group your edges based on the required Multiplier. For example, if you select a quarter pattern edge for the pant front, use a Multiplier of 2 to obtain the full front measurement. Your selection can include one or more lines and curves, but the Multiplier must be identical for this set of selected items.

The system provides a list summarizing all selections. Review this list for completeness and accuracy before proceeding.

You must define the front and back of the waistband separately. This is necessary for dynamic placement of the opening.

Remember to exclude darts from your waistband length selection.

Waistband Options

A wide range of options is available to customize your waistband.

Waistband Ease

Use this option to add positive or negative ease to the waistband's final length. Historically, negative ease (reducing length) was common (e.g., 1940s and 1950s). Modern designers may prefer positive ease (lengthening). Set the value to 0 to ensure a perfect match with the selected edges.

Over Extension

This value adds an overlap to the waistband, which is required for closures like snaps or buttons.

Under Extension

Use this option to create an underlap, where the waistband extends past the center to sit beneath the overlapping side.

Finished Width

This is the final width of the waistband after construction. Do not include seam allowances or extra width for folds; these are calculated automatically.

Self-Faced

Waistbands are often interfaced for structure. Selecting this option increases the pattern width to allow the waistband to be folded twice, creating a self-faced, multi-layer structure.

Opening Position

You must define the position where the waistband will be split. The resulting draft of the band varies significantly based on this choice.

Final Waistband Pattern

Your final waistband pattern will include several important markings:

• Dashed blue lines indicating the Center Front, Center Back and Sides
• Extensions for any requested overlaps or underlaps
• Fold lines shown as a dashed red line The position of centers and sides will change based on your Opening Position choice. Each section is specifically drafted according to the measurements calculated from your front and back line/curve selections.

The indicated centers and sides will align perfectly with your garment pattern when pinning for sewing (excluding any applied ease).

How to Use

1. Activate the tool by clicking the Add Pocket icon
2. Select lines and curves that define the measurement of the front part of the waistband
3. Enter a Multiplier for this selection
4. Select Measure
5. A list will display that shows the names of the selected items and the multiplier you designated for each
6. Continue to select as many lines and curves necessary to define the entire front waistband length
7. Click Done when you've selected all the edges of the front and are ready to proceed to the back selection
8. Select lines and curves that define the measurement of the back part of the waistband
9. Enter a Multiplier for this selection
10. Select Measure
11. A list will display that shows the names of the selected items and the multiplier you designated for each
12. Continue to select as many lines and curves necessary to define the entire back waistband length
13. Click Done when you've selected all the edges of the back
14. Optional - Enter a value for the Waistband Ease
15. Optional - Enter a value for the Over Extension
16. Optional - Enter a value for the Under Extension
17. Enter the Finished Width of the waistband
18. Indicate whether the waistband will be Self-Faced
19. Select the Opening Position
20. Click Continue when done
21. Click anywhere on the canvas to indicate where the new pattern will be drafted
22. Click Save to keep the waistband pattern or Cancel to abort
